UFC grants Brandon Vera fight extension
UFC heavyweight star Brandon Vera (8-0) recently verbally agreed to renew his UFC deal after he satisfies the final fight on his contract for which he was granted an extension to resolve legal issues with his management team, according to FightNetwork.com.

Vera last fought in November 2006, beating Frank Mir via technical knockhout at UFC 65.

Here’s a snip:

“Vera’s existing contract slated his last fight take place in May, but the fighter was granted the extension by Zuffa LLC., owners of the UFC, to work out legal issues with his current management. Vera, 29, plans to renew his contract with the UFC afterwards.”

From what I gather, this is not a contract extension that ensures he is locked up for future fights inside the Octagon. Rather, just an extension for his final fight to sort things out with his camp.

However, Vera is adamant that he wants to remain with the UFC.

Here’s a snip from the “Truth:”

“I want to stay with the UFC. They have some of the best fighters in the world. It’s an amazing stable of fighters and the who’s who of the MMA world. ‘Cro Cop’ [Mirko Filipovic] is a big factor for me wanting to stay. He’s the number-two guy in the world.”

Looks like UFC President Dana White can put another feather in his cap.

Vera was singing a different tune a few months ago, but now that the landscape has changed significantly due to the Pride sale, he’s all of a sudden a real fan of the UFC. No matter, I’m glad he’s sticking around, more cannon-fodder for Cro Cop and Fedor to mow down on their way to the belt.

I have an idea. Since Vera thinks he can win the belt in HW and LHW and Couture is the only guy to do so, why dont they just let Couture whoop his ass @ 205 and 225. Maybe that would knock him down a notch.

Vera is top drawer, but he’s looking past the champ and I don’t think that’s wise. Fedor is the man, cro cop superb- but Randy is the kind to cause upsets.

Hey Dana I wouldn’t exactly call vera cannonfodder, and yes he was a ship jumper not too long ago but come on give the kid a break, let him get some good management, give him some money and let him fight. Think of him as an investment for the future. And by the way what is the status of Fedor’s contract?I’d like to know how many fights he has on it etc etc…

So this just means that Vera won’t fight until after May and that he MIGHT sign afterwards? Who does this guy think he is? He hasn’t beat anyone even close to the level of Cro Cop. I don’t get what all the buzz about this guys is, especially now that the PRIDE studs are in the mix.

Are the Pride guys still fighting under the Pride banner or will they be UFC guys. I thought they(the fighters) would stay at their orginal brands and they would have inter-promotional fights and one big ppv at the end of the year.

I think thats correct but if your hinting at Sirmixalot’s comment of the Pride guys being in the mix, just the fact that there will be inter-promotional fights will mean a lot less time for other fighters. I’m sure the better and more popular fighters will fight more often leaving less time for B level fighters and making it harder for guys who havnt yet proven themselves to get a lot of fights.

Brandon Vera deserves a chance to prove how good of a heavyweight fighter he is. He’s beat everyone UFC has thrown at him. He is GOOD, not great, not godly. He may not have the heaviest hands, but he has a wicked clinch and thai knees. You need proof?

He may not be top-contender material, but that doesn’t mean he’s not UFC material.

I think Vera is the real deal. He’s not your typical one-dimensional fighter like most fighters out there. Sure they train wrestling, BJJ, and muay thai, but who is really good at everything, not to many fighters. I think some day we’re going to look back and laugh at how one-dimensional most fighters are today, just like we laugh at the early UFC days. In the future I think every guy is going to be like GSP or a Vera, amazing wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and kick boxing. I hope with this news that Vera is going to come back we don’t have to watch him fight O’Brien which is who I thought he is rumored to fight for his last fight on this contract.

Vera is a very talented fighter. He hasn’t proven a whole lot as far as who he’s beaten, but he has destroyed everyone he has fought in UFC so far. I think he has earned the chance to move up the heavyweight ladder.

I totally agree with cheeks420. Vera has shown that he is a top level fighter, but he needs to fight someone like Arlovski or Werdum to prove it before he gets a title shot.

And even if he indeed doesn’t sign with EliteXC, they still have Gina Carano to draw in some viewers.

yo! this is 4 all you haters out there… VERA is the truth, to all yours lies that were posted on this page… one crown, one king, one throne and that simply points to Vera… He was the numba 1 contender 4 that belt before they brought out the natural. He deserved that title shot more than couture. But now, he gets to kick Robocop “Cro Cop’s” ASS and all those lame ass contenders you guys are saying. So basically its a win-win situation for him…He’s g0na be in the industry for a pretty long time people… Because as they say he’s a COMPLETE fighter. Brandon Vera—> Pride Of The Philippines

Don’t be so sure it would knock him down a notch. In an interview Randy was asked who he would leased like to face, and without any hesitation he said Vera. Randy can see how good he is so I don’t understand why the haters can’t. I would hate to see this fight because I’m a huge Randy fan and I think Vera has the tools to beat him.

Vera destroyed his last 6 opponents in about 11 mins combined without taking any punishment himself. They’re not great, but not exactly cans (9-2, 10-4, 9-4, 5-1, 6-3…). CC took almost 5 mins to stop Eddie (the can) Sanchez. I just can’t see CC demolishing Mir in 1 min like Brandon did. I’m sure we will see Vera vs CC soon. I can’t wait!
