Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic was on the receiving end of a devastating head kick last night — something he’s been doing to dudes for years with sensational success.

Without a doubt, Gabriel Gonzaga stunned UFC 70: “Nations Collide” viewers with the way in which he finished Cro Cop. Prior to the bout, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt told everyone who would listen that he would knockout the Croatian.

Boy was he right.

Gonzaga’s now earned himself a date with Randy Couture later this year with the heavyweight title on the line.

As for Cro Cop, he had this to say during the post-fight press conference, according to UFC.com:

“I’m disappointed. I will have to look at the fight and see the mistakes I made.”

When he got dropped, Cro Cop had his ankle and knee bend in a very unnatural direction — it looked like he sustained some form of injury.

When he woke up, he did walk out of the cage. And, he made no mention of an injury during the post-fight discussion from what we can gather.

However, at the airport in Zagreb, Croatia, Cro Cop did reveal to Net.hr that he injured ligaments in his right foot but that it’s, “nothing to fear.” (Thanks — AGAIN — to UFCmania reader, Loken, for the assist).

We’ll keep you posted on his condition.

He said at airport at Zagreb that he did sustain injuries with his foot. But nothing serious. He also confirmed that his remaining 4 fights are his last ones. And he admitted that way he fought he deserved to lose.

In my opinion he should work on his defense from elbows. It was them who knocked him out, not that kick, that was mere formality, shocking and excellently delivered formality if I may add :)

Here is quick translation:

“Malo su otiÅ¡li ligamenti, ali nije niÅ¡ta straÅ¡no. I to je dio moje karijere, i to treba istrpjeti…”

My ligaments are injured, but nothing to fear. That is part of my career and that also should be endured.

What a way to lose for both cro cop and gsp, pretty humiliating. To gsp’s credit though I think he would have mopped the floor with serra if he never got caught, can’t say the same for cro cop. Gonzaga was clearly dominating him, no mistake with this one but at anytime cro cop could have landed that devastating leg kick, unfortunately gonzaga beat him to it. I felt bad for cro cop, after so much hype and expectations to lose so badly, with the irony of getting ko’ed with a leg kick. I hope he kicks ass on this next 4 fights of his contract and this loss not affect him in the future.

I said the last time I left a comment that Cro cop wasn’t the great fighter that everybody thought. When Randelman beat him he knocked him out with a right hand and a hammer fist and when Emeilinenko beat him after a close first round Emielinenko dominated him for the next two rounds so the knock out last night wasn’t a big surprize to me. I still think Branden Vera deserves the next title shot for some resson they keep dissing him.

I couldn’t even post last night cause I’m sure UFCmania would of deleted the post anyway. I’m sick to my stomach about it. I’m also angry to see cro cop lose like that, because I also fear that he won’t fight again. All night I was Like “just watch it, another upset, that’s all we’ve seen lately.” FUCK!! ok some thoughts…
Randy will be a better fight for Gonzaga because he is so smart (kinda like I thought Cro cop was) and I still think Randy will win because he’s an expert at putting his plan into action.
Now that cro cop lost, and Arlovski won without much Flare, maybe we will see cro cop fight Arlovski. wishful thinking.

God I hated to see that kick. It was like watching a friend get beat up and theres nothing you could do. I seriously thought Mirko might have been dead in the ring when everyone was crouching around him. Damn, I mean what does he do now, start from the bottom and fight Sanchez again? fuck I can’t stand it. sorry for venting guys

I butchered this sentence here :). Anyway you guys are forgetting that this bum, can as some you are calling Gonzaga is main contender for belt now, he now is at top of UFC.
Mirko lost, plain and simple. Why he lost? We cant say for sure. Not enough motivation, not enough training, and bad attitude towards bout (he tought that he will walk true UFC) are probably some of reasons, on other hand Gonzaga was ready, he was motivated and trained hard. Upsets happen in sport, underdogs do win. Gonzaga won, good for him. Mirko lost, well bad for him.

In My opion I don’t think we’ll see much more of Mr. Cro Cop in the UFC. Correct me if I’m wrong but, he only has one more fight left on his UFC contract and its not going to be a title shot. I see him going back to pride after his next fight where he was a dominate force! He walked in to his last fight listening to the pride theme song for god sake!

He just seems distant from everything UFC… Hell, they didn’t even show him on the UFC 70 preshow? Gonzaga, bisping, elvis etc. no cro cop?

I just get the feeling he likes the Pride setting more.

Crocop v Poopie next makes sense.

No one is ignoring that Mirko said his next four are his last, we all know he is retiring; old news, dude.

Now the expectations are off of CC. He is again just another contender like he was in Pride. Might be the best thing for him really.

And no, Randy did not call it. Randy said Gonzaga would win via sub, thinking back to the Big Nog fight. With GG’s size, he figured he could take Mirko down, and with his Mundial-winning BJJ, that a sub would end it. He never said anything about a KO.

And stop all this BULLSHIT about CC having a weak chin. Two KO’s in his MMA career, Randlemans full force, clean hit overhand and the most devasting head kick any of you have ever seen. Fedor couldnt do it, Hunt couldnt, and Wandy couldnt. His chin is a lot better than AA’s, for sure. I’ve never seen Werdum rock anyone in Pride like he did last night.

Now, to who it fits, become more educated fans, and realize losses happen to everyone not named Fedor. Mirko is a very honest fighter, admitting he fought poorly, and will change and come back for four more. Those of you who claim to be so sure that this would happen, please screen shot your Betus.com wager sheet and post it, or stfu. I never once read here, or anywhere else someone say pre-fight that GG would KO him. Calling Mirko “Crocop” Filipovic “overrated” or “not that good” is disingenuous and shows complete ignorance of MMA. MoreThanUFC!

No way does getting knocked out by that kick make CCs chin suspect. It would have knocked out anyone it connected with. However it does show holes in his defense. Not training in a cage sounds arrogant to me. People say what they want but everytime Gonzaga has knocked someone out that I’ve seen, it looked brutal. Randy would have been able to get inside CC guard if he brought that game he brought last night. In all fairness though, Randy has never and could not have knocked Mirko out with a kick like that. Just too far outside of Randys natural talents. He would have got inside and drove CC to the ground and pounded him though. Getting caught hurt CC in Pride and now the UFC. Good news is now we can go right to the AA vs CC and let them fight it out. Cause so far I’m still unsatisfied with AA and he needs to prove himself.

There’s no way Cro Cop or Gonzaga would have a chance against Vera unlike Cro Cop Vera always has a plan when he fights. Ad that to his raw talent and he is the best fighter in the ufc, and he will be heavywieght and maybe even light heavywieght champion if Lidell isn’t careful!

If Vera gets his contract figured out I would love to see him in the mix. He might very well be CC’s next fight. CC asked for him, and since it is fact that AA is the next in line for a title shot now, he is takin. Same with Gonzaga. So if you think about it, it makes sense.
Oh shoot I forgot though, NOG was rumored to fight Vera next. I dunno man, it all depends, especially seeing how this year has gone.
On you guys saying that the stand up hurt CC’s chances. Look at what your saying, STAND UP, HURT, CC. That’s like an oxymoron.
Apparently, CC needs to train on his ground game in the cage, as the cage greatly assists GnP. CC can’t handle BOWS!!

What next, Big Nog koed by Marcio Cruz?
lol hahaha. that pretty much seems like what has been going on. Marcio’s first fight in Ufc was one of the most embarrasing fights i have ever seen. his stand up has improved a little though so watch out Big Nog
Well nector that is quite an opinion. Vera is pretty good, he seems like a heavyweight A. Silva, and now that the heavyweights’ sense of reality has been somewhat shaken I would say anything is possible. It seems the only thing in the way of Vera’s success is Vera.
I have to agree with you there Vera has to start really thinking about fighting and stop thinking about his contract problems. As good as I think he is if he doesn’t fight again soon he’s going to start getting rusty!

Just seen this on Cro Cops website

April 24rd, 2007

Mirko arrived to his hometown today, he was limping a bit. He said: I deserved that loss because of the way i was fighting. I fall down every now and then, i was twice in this situation, after Randleman and after Fedor and i got back up again, i will be back this time too, that is a part of my career. I have 4 more fights to come and i will do them all.

I am a massive Cro cop fan and hope to see him back soon….

I do agree with this. Which i thought was a t Gonzaga’s disadvantage with CC being the stronger striker. As we all saw sever seconds later “Good Night CC” I still can’t believe it went tdown like that. I’m stunned. I been watching it over and over
anyone think randy has a shot at this gonzaga animal?? or are we gonna have a new heavyweight champ…also whats the deal with top ranked fighters training easy for opponents they should beat, it dosent matter who it is its MMA train hard for every fight.
Totally agree with the training part of the comment. As for Randy losing to Gonzaga. Here is my early prediction…..Randy will beat Gonzaga. The Natural is much smarter in the cage and he will study this stunning victory for Gonzaga we were all shocked by last night. But…but…but..Randy called it “Gonzaga will win” I think it’s nuts that Randy called it, but this pick is what tells me he will beat Gonzaga. Randy is MMA right now. Pulling off the impossible over big Tim, calling out the Gonzaga victory. He will ddfend and prove to eveyone that he can figure out how to beat anyone. He will find a away. He will fight Chuck again. We will hopefully see Champ Vs. Champ soon

I’m so glad Gonzaga missed that punch after CC fell to the floor. That would of been additional damage that would of sucked. CC was obviousll out the second he got hit. The lights went out! That punch Gonzaga was following up with look like it was coming with some fury. Glad he missed it. Congrats Gabriel Gonzaga! Obviously this guy is the real deal. Looking forward to Couture/Gonzaga.

Being as I didnt notice anyone else mention it, I just though I’d give props to Herb Dean for the quick stoppage. He reacted the second Cro Cop went out and managed to pull Gonzaga off before he was able to punch the unconcious Cro Cop.

This whole quest for the belt thing seems less and less important to me. Obviously, it will remain most fighters motivation, but with all of the talent coming up, I dont see anyone holding it for very long in any division. That is unless Fedor comes over.

I’m with everyone else in hoping that Cro Cop is alright, that shit looked nasty. And I’m hoping that whoever his last fight is against, that it proves worthy of being Cro Cop’s final fight.

Crocop v Poopie next makes sense.

Hey big mouth, i was sayin GG would beat CroCop - i have my betting slip from bet365 - i can show it to you to prove it if you want - i am a god dam genious when it comes to fight outcomes - i also bet on Serra v GSP, i knew for a fact that he would win which is why i put my money where my mouth is, AND i also put money on Koscheck, who i knew would win from the weigh in dispute - again, if you want me to prove this to you, id do it gladly
Post it. Screen shot, go to tinypic.com, upload, and link it.

Some of the comments here seem pretty ignorant. Cro Cop is an outstanding fighter who had a bad night. And no, the elbows didn’t finish him…he was clearly in control of his faculties when he got back in stand up.

He just got caught. Something which has happened to pretty much every fighter who steps in the ring for very long. And sometimes - for whatever reason - top fighters just aren’t prepared to fight. Even Fedor has caught punches or slams or moves from clearly inferior opponents that nearly finished him, yet Fedor always somehow escapes. Eventually, if he keeps fighting, even Fedor will have an off-night and a lesser fighter will take his belt. Liddell, Franklin, Couture, Hughes and all of the UFC’s great champions are a testament to that fact.

Is Anderson Silva as much better than Rich Franklin than he was on the night he took the belt from him? No. If you’d never seen the two, Franklin looked like a total hack, and yet everyone knows he isn’t. Franklin just didn’t have it that night. It happens in every other sport, and I don’t see that MMA is any different.

Cro Cop didn’t have it yesterday. Anyone who’s watched many of his fights wouldn’t doubt his immense talent. Only an extraordinary fighter could win the Pride Open like he did.

What’s most interesting to me is to watch Gonzaga and see how good he can be. He looked great on the ground and standing up yesterday.

I can’t wait to see Crocop heal up and return to the octogon, only to be knocked out again. He has NO defense on the ground. Perhaps he should stop focusing on his special police pursuit and concentrate on fighting. Maybe then he’l survive past round two.

By the way, as disappointed as I was about Crocop, how about Arlovski. The guy didnt impress me…even after fighting a chump. Too afraid of gettign his glass chin touched. Pit Bull my ass.
