UFC 74: Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck
Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (13-2) could face rising 170-pound talent Josh Kosheck (9-1) in his next bout, according to statements from UFC President Dana White to FightNetwork.com.

Here’s a snip:

“White announced that [Matt] Serra will join Matt Hughes as a competing coach on the next season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series – which begins shooting this Spring for a Fall broadcast - and predicted that St. Pierre would likely face Josh Koscheck in the interim. TUF 6 will culminate with the two coaches squaring off against each other in a title fight some time near the end of the year.”

St. Pierre was penciled in to face former champion Matt Hughes later this year in a rubber match — possibly at the Bell Centre in Montreal. However, underdog Matt Serra spoiled those plans on April 7 at UFC 69 with a huge upset over the Canadian.

Now, it looks like Serra and Hughes will clash sometime in late fall after the taping of TUF 6 — quite a bit of time for that to happen if you ask me.

St. Pierre — who is apparently not entitled to an immediate rematch — will have to settle for a bout with the former collegiate wrestling standout. And, he’ll have to wait until 2008 for another shot at the 170-pound strap if this is eventually confirmed. That’s assuming, of course, “Rush” can get passed the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product.

During his win over Diego Sanchez at UFC 69, Koscheck proved that he can hang with the top talent in the division with his unspectacular — but effective — performance. He’s improved his MMA game immensely since his stint on season one of TUF.

But, he’ll face his stiffest challenge to date if he does indeed lock horns with GSP.

At this time, it appears that if the two welterweights meet up it will be at UFC 74 on August 25.

Thats what i figured after Koscheck beat Sanchez…it’s a great test for KOS but i think if St.Pierre goes back to his old ways and no mercy training, studying his opponent and strategizing he’ll destroy KOS in the first round and look to get his title back asap…but if he comes in like he did vs. Serra then he’ll get knocked out again and we’ve seen how much improved KOS’s standup is.

So Hughes loses the belt and gets a creampuff(Lytle), and St. Pierre loses the belt and gets Koscheck. Hahaha man some of these fighters are so babied. I’ll bet the GSP nuthuggabunch is going to be all over this.

Should be an interesting fight though. It is good that they’re not just giving him a someguy. I would also like to see Fitch vs. Sanchez.

This fight makes sense. Matt Hughes wanted a creampuff after his loss, and GSP is a badass so he wants a tough fight. KOS will be a good matchup for GSP, but I expect GSP to get back to his winning ways. This whole TUF thing, with Hughes and Serra as the coaches is going to drag out this whole saga a lot longer than it needs to be.
LET SERRA AND HUGHES FIGHT ALREADY! WE DON’T NEED TO WAIT 6 MONTHS TO SEE IT!

Serra hates him now, image if he lost the title and then had to coach with him. Or better, beat Hughes, tease him all season, then lose.

GSP getting the rematch winner. Would watch every show for sure. And make that annoying guest coach that Serra hated fight GSP at the finale as well.

That makes a hell of a lot more sense to me. If Dana really wanted to create a buzz, he’d make them fight before the next TUF season. GSP and the winner of the Serra/Hughes fight would make a great finale for the next TUF. I can’t believe we’ve got to wait for fricken ever long for this fight to happen.

As long as GSP gets his head right I’m sure he will be fine. Kos looked much improved but he’s not at the GSP level. I still think Diego could beat KOS. I’m glad we will get to see this fight but it seems so far from now. I guess they have no choice since the battle of the MAtt’s will take place on TUF 6 and that’s the next title battle. That fight isn’t scheduled till end of the year. What the hell! Who did the planning on this one??

I actually think this would be a great idea. it woulde def. cause for more drama on the season. Afterall, isn’t that what TUF is all about. Attract new viewer’s and fans with drama on t.v. and then we finally get a winner. I will admit the TUF products have been somewhat descent but none great yet. I would put battle of the MAtt’s before season, and make them Coach right after. Winner gets winner of GSP/Kos

thats only the best scenerio for the fans, for the company it makes more sense to have them coach before they fight, and thats why they do it that way. How effective would Serra’s coaching be right after he takes a beating in front of the world and loses his belt, which is the only thing that actually makes him a stand out fighter?

They buy PRIDE FC then make us wait like 8 months for a WW Title defence? Get your head on straight.

They need to change the format immediately considering they have twice as many fighters now.

Make a WW Grand Prix, I’d honestly pay $54.99 or whatever the De La Hoya PPV is, to see a WW Grand Prix with 16 best WW fighters in UFC/PrideFC.

Personally knowing the type of fighter Serra is win or lose he would give a great TUF season. He’s a great coach overall and beating Matt Hughes would hype the situation even more, but losing to Hughes would pump the guy up to get involved in the season more leading up to a possible Serra/Hughes II. In a business perspective BMEss your right…. it does not make sense to make them fight first. Therefore making all us fans wait till the season ends. With winner of GSP/Kos getting the following title shot.

If GSP smartens up (which he will) i dont think he will have a problem taking out KOS .. using the Sanchez and KOS fight as an example… Sanchez was not attacking on the other hand GSP will bring it on from the get go.. and is too fast… Kos doesent stand a good chance.

And Matt Hughes will destroy Serra.. he knoes he has to be careful so Serra doesent get that lucky punch in.. but he will finish Serra no problem

GSP has beaten BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, Karo Parisian, Sean Sherk & Frank Trigg. How can anyone knock a fighter with wins over World-Class competition like this under his belt? Whether you like GSP or not, to overlook his record is plain disrespectful.

On another note, I’m a GSP fan AND a Kos fan, no matter how this turns out I probably won’t be all that happy with the end result. At the very least I can hope for an all out war…….actually, Kos is in a position in his career to take a loss from a fighter of GSP’s level & not have it ruin his momentum that much. Especially with his recent win over Diego. GSP on the other hand would suffer more from a 2nd loss which would make 2 in a row for him which would send him tumbling back towards the bottom of the 170 division.

I guess since TUF 6 is going to debute in the Fall, they will start, or have already started the taping for the show. Makes it hard for them to fight before the season start. What Dana should have done was get Serra and Hughes to commit to coaching TUF 6, have them fight, THEN start taping season 6. The problem is that Dana would NEVER have these two fight if it wasn’t a PPV. There’s way too much money to be made!

This is great news, I just want to put those last 2 main events out of my mind, thank you dana. I personally thought before the diego/koscheck fight that koscheck had a real chance( 40 - 50 % )of pulling off a spit or major decision with his wrestling ability. I was half right, I knew koscheck was a little underestimated by most and that his stand up had improved a lot but still thought sanchez would probably win. I’m still not convinced that if sanchez fought koscheck again koscheck would win, I think diego is the better one on the ground and even though he could’nt stop the take downs he could reverse it and get a better position. I really thought gsp would destroy serra though and still think he would have if he never got caught, s**t happens though. If the real gsp, the one who dismantled hughes shows up for this fight, koscheck is in serious trouble and I think he’ll lose and lose bad. If he does manage to get gsp down, no way in hell is he keeping him there, he’s just too good, and even though he’s improved with his stand up, gsp would destroy him standing, unless he gets caught again. I’m looking forward to the serra/hughes fight and the koscheck/gsp fight….and really hope there both fluke free, so we can really see the fighters actual skills.

NO! That shit wont happen again. Not with the regularity that it has in recent months. I am absolutely positive that GSP will come out with the right frame of mind. I won’t take anything away from Kos, but a pissed off GSP is something that I dont think anyone in that division can handle.

Kos and Serra can’t hang with there opponents besides anything lucky and unusual. Pierre and Hughes will come out on top and rule the division again, they are a level above everyone else, untill BJ comes back up to WW. That’s gonna make things real interesting. But believe it, we will see GSP/Hughes III, it just sucks it will take so long.

I hate to bring this up because I think GSP is the man and I hope that he doesn’t fall into this category, but EVERY fighter who has lost a major fight, two fights in a row, or a high profile fight, HAS NOT come back in fine style to their “old self”. Matt h vs lytle, franklin vs MacD, AA vs fabrico, Sanchez vs kos (high profile fight) just to name a few. I think the fighters are so scared to lose again that they don’t let loose and fight like there is no tomorrow. GSP has A LOT to lose if Kos wins but no shame on Kos if Kos loses becasue he’s a up and comer, no one expects him to win. I think GSP is on a whole differnt level than Kos but Kos is hungry and CAN win. Albeit not many people, including myself, WANTS him to win, but he CAN. I hope GSP gets his head right and makes a statement out of his next fight and knocks somones block off but the potential for things to go bad are highly probable so if you are smart don’t bet a lot of money on this one!!!!

When GSP fights and believes he will win, he seems to do just that. When he was saying no one in his weight class could andle his riddum, he was kicking ass. When he said he was gonna hunt Hughes till the end, he did. Gsp needs to cut the modesty shit out, knowing you’re a great fighter doesnt make you arogant, being an asshole like Hughes does. Its okay to believe in your abilities. Now more then ever he must think there is a chance he can loose, and I think this needs to end. Whether there is or isnt a chance of a lose, George needs to believe he is an unstopable nightmare(no referances to “wet dream” Sanchez) When I fight I say to myself, “If I die today, thats okay” There is no future, ever fight is a fight to the death, there is no press conferance after, no post fight party, just two guys and in a ring dancing with death, might as well enjoy it.

Diego is not top tallent, up and coming maybee but no way is he top, and I still rank KOS lower than Sanchez. Their competetion has been pretty weak, with the exception of Karo of course. Other than that both guys have to prove something before I even see either Headline or co-healine a fight card, the fact that GSP has to fight kos now is crap and a big drop in competition for georges espeacially after the upset. Hughes might like the pampering, but come on we keep hearing that the welterweiight division is stacked, stacked…..with what: over hyped wrestlers, rappit punching and short grabbing champion (check out all of serra previouse bouts for that), penn is gone to LW, hughes fighting a third string fighter for his rematch, fitch keeps getting passed over the list goes on and on. Georges its time to throw the cloves and bite down on your mouth pieces and keep looking at the hughes giggle tape and retire all these punks!

I think gsp could easily….yes I said easily, mop the floor with ANY welter weight if he fights like he fought hughes. The difference between any of his other fights and the serra fight is obvious to me, he seemed like a relentless animal in his other matches, he was almost acting as if he was trying to give serra a chance, not good. Like he said he usually fights like there’s no tomorrow, and has nothing to lose but it seems when he has something to lose he sort of chokes. Man I really hope he gets his head on straight and the old gsp comes back better than ever, that would be sweet. Koscheck would get a first class lesson in humility, something diego failed to give him, but I KNOW gsp has the ability to give one.

I’ve been having this arguement for the entire month of April. The winner of a Skill vs Skill match-up is much more legitimate IMHO than those that win with fluke situations. I know a “W” is what it’s all about but HOW you get there means just as much in my book.

He’s just lucky Diego wasn’t himself that last fight or he would have beaten him. I think we should all email ufc and tell them wer’re going to boycott his shit. Gsp loses his title 4 months into the year and has to wait the rest of the year for another shot. Bullshit. He’ll beat Kos and then what? Only two fights in one year? I mean he took out Burkman in the second round like nothing but yet UFC gives Burkman a fight agains Karo but Fitch isn’t scheduled against any other top 5 contendors. It really doesn’t make sense and I personally believe that he would hurt most of the welterweights in the UFC right now.

As far as Kos vs. GSP… GSP is going to expose kos. I’m not sure what happened with Sanchez. I think he had the stand up skills to take Kos, but maybe he was worried about keeping his perfect record and didn’t commit. GSP will step it up and clown that punk.
Agreed, diego so didn’t look himself and looked like a deer in the headlights, I KNOW he can do so much better. No way in hell will gsp let him get away with what he did with sanchez, I have never heard booing at a gsp fight, for good reason. I’m still not a diego fan mainly because of his attitude but think hes a good fighter and exciting to watch….most of the time. I think nerves got the best of him with this fight, he seemed so focused on his perfect record. I’m looking forward to his next fight and think he’ll kick ass, unless he fights gsp or hughes next.

Kosheck is unreal but cant beat St Pieere. Serra will Punish Hughes. St Pierre will then regain his title over Serra. Kosheck will retire Hughes. Sounds good Hughes retired!

I would not count KOS out. Last fight he was a man with a plan. He showed a lot of discipline and shocked a lot of people with his improved striking. Who knows what other surprises he might have up his sleeve?

st.pierre and kos will never happen. st.pierre spoke to peace magazine and listed josh koscheck as a friend that he would never fight, along with david loiaseau nate mardquard and jonathan goulet. He claims that his first karate teacher who passed away trained him to never fight a friend for any amount of money or any reason. George said he would give up a belt befor tangling with kos. He made these statements in march 2007 issue aswell as on all access george st,pierre. so not sure what you guys are all going on about.

To all the commentators who said why did hughes get a cream puff (lytle) and gsp gets koscheck? Gsp got serra and hughes got lytle after they fought each other, unfortunately gsp lost against serra and now is facing koscheck. Both hughes and gsp got ” cream puffs ” but the truth is both cream puffs were no cream puffs. Lytle and serrra are both under rated and have had pretty shitty luck in there mma career, not saying there at gsp’s and hughes level just I think they have more skills than they get credit for. Styles make fights and nights make fights, what more can I say?

First off St.Pierre will destroy KOS, second why the fuck is Hughes getting a shot so soon, Franklin isn’t getting his rematch

You make a good point, Matt Hughes wasn’t impressive against Lytle and his fight before that he got KTFO, then I’m seeing Koz, N.Diaz, Fitch, St.Pierre, Parysian on and on and on I can name fighters who have either already beaten Matt Serra or are fully capable of doing so, staying in the mix of “paying their due’s” Fighters,
Matt was destroyed, his loss to St.Pierre was no lucky shot, he was outclassed.
There is no reason why Matt Hughes should get his title shot so quickly…Have this guy earn his shot, all he had to do was beat up Lytle and he gets a shot, that makes me sick. Either there was a title shot clause in his contract and he figures this is his easiest chance of getting that Championship money or Dana White is playing favorites. Either way it stinx!

Matt hughes does have a rematch clause in his contract but you all seem to be over looking one little detail. The little detail is he won the welter weight title 9 times and defended it 7 times, quite a feat…..if anyone deserves it he does.

Like Sera said,” I feel sorry for GSP’s next opponent”,and so do I because they’re going to take a beating. Georges said ,”I’m on a mission” and I believe him. We are going to see the best GSP ever.

I think you meen he won it 2 times and defended it 9 times. Randy was the first (and only one) to win a title 3 times in one weight class.

Koscheck will be the next World Champion. He just spanked Sanchez. This is a very tough fight for Geroge.
Fitch and Sanchez would be a great fight if Sanchez shows up and I bet not.

If you’re talking about Koscheck you’re wrong. He’s a NCAA Div. 1 champion, hardly an amateur. There’s a difference between practicing with the Canadian Olympic team, which is what St. Pierre does, and actually winning wrestling tournaments which Koscheck has done. Koscheck is definitely the better wrestler. Is he the better MMA fighter? I doubt it.

Honestly, Who has KOS beat that was worth 2 shits besides sanchez and I hardly call that a fight. I say GSP by TKO in the first round.

Now, now.. time to brush up on MMA. On paper, it’s quite obvious who should win. With past wins over Hughes, Trigg, Sherk, Parysian, Penn etc, GSP’s record and experience is far superior to Koscheck’s. That’s a given. It’s clear that GSP has also improved by leaps and bounds in the last three years. If things go the way they should, we’ll see Koscheck KTFO within 2 rounds. It’s all about GSP’s state of mind during the fight. I tend to thing Serra was right in saying that he feels sorry for GSP’s next opponent. In theory, Rush should show up real hungry for a win.

i don’t think he has a punchers chance cus he’s not a puncher.
the best i could imagine is he loses a decision for surviving but not ttacking
