“UFC® continues to take Europe by storm as UFC 72: VICTORY hits Northern Ireland! Rich “Ace” Franklin continues his quest to regain the UFC Middleweight Championship as he takes on another top middleweight contender, Yushin Okami. Plus, Light Heavyweight favorite Forrest Griffin returns to the Octagon to face Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez. UFC 72: VICTORY will be live, Saturday, 16 June, from The Odyssey in Belfast LIVE on pay-per-view in the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.”
– That’s the latest from UFC.com, which is a departure from recent statements from UFC President Dana White and other officials that the event would air for free on the Spike television network. White mentioned that the promotion “took it on the chin” with UFC 70: “Nations Collide” in Manchester, England, which could be the reason UFC 72 is now a pay-per-view event.

Wow thats funny, because after reading the last few posts on it, I thought to myself, ‘Good thing this is free.’ I dont see this one pulling in the type of money the last few did. For my money, I’ll wait for 73. The only thing that has me mildly interested is Okami vs. Franklin.
that sucks, i thought they watered down the card a little bit because it was free, and i thought they had to make a killing with the commercials on 70, but i guess not if they’re saying they took it on the chin, i’ll still buy the ppv, i’ll never miss another one…
Put Okami on the card and apparently they feel they can muster up enough PPV buys, instead of it being free on cable. Pretty lame card, but in MMA great fights can happen with no namers!
this will be one that i will not buy
That really sucks! They should never said it would be free. Dana is going back on his word just like Tito did with him.
I can’t believe this crap! The card sucks. I’ll admit that Okami is a better fight for Rich which makes the card a bit better to watch but the rest of card sucks. They should do a buy 71 and get 72 half off on PPV.
2 headline fights? and one is forrest against a relative no namer, and they want 40 bucks? most of the ufc ppvs have been having 4 big fights, all 8 guys being well known. this seems like a downsized ppv to me. 73 looks great.
I reckon we’d better get used to this pay per view CRAP both in the States and over here in UK. UFC70 was ok but had it not been for me chipping in with mates, there was NO WAY I was gonna buy it. And the bigger UFC becomes, the more they know they’ll get for it. Lets face it, Dana White’s not doing it for fans, its all money and soon every event crap or not will DEFINATELY be PPV. CRAP!! Me, I’ll keep sniding it online lol
That’s good. I’ll pay $5 to get in the pool hall and watch it. Let’s see, $5 vs. all the stupid commercials….I think I spend a lousy 5 bucks.
Dana needs to make a press release.

dido
When Dana implies that they took it in the chin, does that mean that the ratings for 70 sucked?
there is no way on planet earth that i will buy this paperview. unless franklin gets beat into oblivian by okamis ground and pound. then i will buy the replay to see him get his ass beat. other than that i will save my money

Haha I’ll second this, get the petition going….
noone is gunna buy this well at least i sure as hell wont
I never miss a UFC event even if im not realy excited about any of the fights because its usualy the fights that your not expecting alot from and there the ones with all the action, sometimes anyway. Also the fact that I live in the UK means that I dont get to see any of them live but every single one that is on PPV here I will pay for coz Im fookin mad for it.When Chuck fought Tito in December my bro booked that on UFC on demand coz thats the only way we can watch live the big events in the US but to my horror and disgust the bastard thing didnt work and I swear I blew a fukin fuse, the computer went threw the fukin window,it was so frustrating because I had been literaly counting down the days not only for the Chuck fight but also for Bispings PPV debut,so I dont know what went wrong there but it put me off ever doing that again coz it was so disapointing.
When Dana implies that they took it in the chin, does that mean that the ratings for 70 sucked?
I think he means, they lost money with all the marketing, etc. in Europe and did make it up at the tunstiles.

quote of the day i very much agree
am I going to be watching UFC72 at like 2pm? my ass is still in bed at that time on saturdays…
If UFC 70 didnt make good ratings then why would he say this one would be free, then later say no…….whata bunch of shit…This card seriously blows. I’ll just wait a day later and watch Franklin on youtube or something.
This is a rough one. The UFC brass should know by now that people buy PPV’s by name recognition and word of mouth. They dont have either of those with that card. You cant tell people that its going to be free then turn around and do the opposite. I dont expect this one to be a big seller, although some of the match ups will be fairly descent.
I could care less, I have free to air satellite. Unless I get zapped, Im good to go. And your all welcome to my place and watch it for free!!
Screw that, dude. I’m glad it’s PPV. I’ll gladly pay to watch it without commercials.
this card is nothing more than an ultimate fight night a little amped up w/franklin vs okami. i will save my money for 73 and go to a sports bar like everyone else for 72. it could end up being an exciting card, but i’ll bet the ppv sells will be very low. a afternoon ppv with no championship fights sounds like a ripoff to me. dana does need to make up for this . how does half price at $20 sound?
Isn’t the idea for the European cards to be on HBO eventually? They probably don’t want to lose to much money until the HBO deal kicks in.
What the….
Do you know how many of my friends, co-workers, ect. watched UFC 70 and said it was so cool? A few more Spike TV fights that arn’t “Ultimate Fight Night” and you might double your fan base.
All new fans are seeing is the crappy ultimate fighter 5. If you ask me, if you can get UFC live events on cable, get them on freaken cable! Hell, boxing just had that “Contender Challenge” and that wasn’t too bad.
Sounds like trip to Hooters with the guys and we almost got kicked out for chanting “GSP GSP GSP”.
Take care of the fans, and you’ll make plenty of money.
If its a PPV and the price is say $15, ok. But this card is a joke for $40. No way.
hoodlum, right on the money
If the UFC would throw out a bone every once in a while, not every other event, and keep fight night midweek, the fanbase #s and future PPV $$s would rise exponentially.
I will probably watch this one at the pool hall with friends.
That sucks, the card was weak and this makes it less appealing.
Not free eh? U.F.C. F.U.!

Not even half price. $9.95 until they add another big fight… but the card is probably just about set.
If they took it on the chin for 70, then it’s probably because that Joe dickhead owner of Girls Gone Wild hasn’t paid them. Seems like he’d bought up half the slots. Maybe his assets are frozen because of the tax evasion problems.
HELP !
I Found some cheap, front row IFL tickets for the show in Chicago; ya know since the UFC is slackin on gettin to Chicago
My question is, has anyone been to any IFL shows and if so how were they?
Maybe compared to other smaller shows tho, not the UFC. I understand it doesnt compare.
UFCmania ?

10 bucks sounds even better! an afternoon ppv w/ no championship fight what a joke! i think dana’s been watching to many don king clips
how much do the ppvs cost in the states? I get them for $20 in New Zealand.
maybee they can add a travis lutter vs gabe ruediger pie eating contest.
As mentioned before it should be purchase 71 and get 72 for half off
Really anyone with a bar close by can go and watch it for cheap. I live here in Calgary, AB, and go to a place called Stix. It is $10 for a ticket but they usually give you two free drink vouchers with it! Granted most places arent gonig to be that great but still you never have to pay full price if you dont want to. There is tons of places where you can go and probably somewhere locally for cheap. Just keep your eyes pealed and I know there is always a list of all the places, at least in the States, on UFC.com.
I can understand all the arugeements over this card could very well suck but Forest is on there and we all know what he is like. Then you get Okami vs Franklin, so that could very well be a very good fight especially since both guys are looking for #1 contendership. They will throw down. Two great fights can make a card worth while. I mean how many people after Shootout were still buzzing from the Garcia and Hureta fight? I know I was… while silently sobbing about GSP losing lol
I think by purchasing this event, you/we will be supporting this great sport!..Regardless of this mediocre fight card.
I’ve missed alot of grest UFC’s, i don’t think i will miss another one again!..
~See ya~
WHAT A BUNCH OF FREAKIN LOSERS….YOU SPEND AT LEAST FORTY DOLLARS ON FREAKIN STARBUCKS AND BURGER KING AND YOU GUYS CANT PART WITH IT TO SUPPORT A SPORT THAT THESE MEN ARE TRAING LIKE IDIOTS FOR TO ENTERTAIN YOU FREAKIN LAMEBRAINS!!!!
how much do the ppvs cost in the states? I get them for $20 in New Zealand.
It costs $40 in Canada.
This isn’t fair DW said it would be free,he shouldn’t be allowed to change the decision.Let us watch it for free this time and don’t get our hopes up again.
I can see this being the lowest in buy rates the ufc has had in a long time.
You know if theyr gonna have a UFC ppv like every month or so, they really need to make it cheaper. Yeh alot of people can afford it, or “lay of the mcd’s” for one night to afford it. However some people like myself (college students) and parents, and those just paying too many bills cant be paying 40$ every damn show. I love the UFC, but im quite worried that this may become something like the WWF, a PPV every other week, $40 a pop and mediocre at best.

hahahahahahaha
rich franlin, yushin okami, forrest griffin, tyson griffin, ed herman, jason mcdonald, clay quida, marcus davis, eddie sanchez, hector ramirez, jake o’brien, scott smith, some pretty good fighters on this card and if not good at least exciting, the forrest vs. hector ramirez fight should be exciting as hell, ramirez was beating james irvin before trying to break irvin’s knee with his face, tyson griffin vs. clay quida will be fireworks for sure, ty griffin never disappoints, he’s a stud, ed herman vs. scott smith can’t be that bad, both guys are usually exciting to watch win or lose, eddie sanchez can hit hard, jake o’brien is undefeated, jason mcdonald is definitely fun to watch, he should be able to submit rory singer and that will be nice to see, marcus davis is on a winning streak, his fists are irish hand grenades, and rich franklin vs. okami is a solid solid #1 contender match, its really not that bad of a card, i bet if you guys get it you’ll be surprised at how many good fights you’ll see, at least with these fights you know they’re not gonna be built up huge and let down even huger when they suck like diego vs. kos, machida vs. heath, arlovski vs. werdum and on and on, at least with this card we know these guys are hungry for wins and will do whatever it takes to get them…i think the card could be better for sure, i know there are no title fights, but there are only 5 belts and we can’t always get one of those i guess, but i still think the fights will be exciting, i’d much rather it was free but i still think it’ll be worth the money, hopefully we’ll get to see more than just 4 or 5 fights, hopefully we have some quick endings and get to see like 7 or 8 and i think we will, maybe i’m just trying to think optimistically, but i’ll be watching for sure…

Thanks for that, guess I got it lucky down here.
All solid points spida, gotta get it nomatter what. What else is there to watch anyway.
Wait Eddie Sanchez is fighting Jake O’brian? Oh shoot I didn’t even know that. That should be pretty legit. Your right man it really is not that bad. Sure its no 73, but lets don’t get greedy.
no they aren’t fighting each other
Awwww man. No wonder I didn’t know that. That would be a good fight though no? Jake could probably just out wrestle him, but Eddie is a big guy
sanchez is fighting a guy named colin robinson who is 8-2 and only one of his fights has gone to a decision and he’s won his last 6 so that fight will not be going the distance, and o’brien is fighting some guy named tom murphy who hasn’t fought in over a year but is 2-0 with two (T)KO’s and his last fight was in the ufc against some bum, so that fight might not be all that, but o’brien is still very good and undefeated…

Man I think MTUFC was just being sarcastic. It was a pretty funny remark IMO. There really isnt any need in calling people out. Besides calling people out over the internet is just stupid.
will pay to see Rich smash Yoshimitsu. he will bring it
hey, have it YOUR way buddy, but at least by sitting and watching these fights you can see some new blood, some up and coming fighters….how the hell do you think the top ten got to be the top ten, they had to start somewhere. THANKS for being such a GREAT mma supporter. i’ll let the KING know you want more pickles. bye bye
hey gord, when i saw your name…well now i understand…. umm, you dont seem like the type to APPRECIATE the intense training these fighters go through to bring these fights to you….SO PLEASE DONT WATCH THEM,meet your buddy at burger king in honor of your name!!

I dont even know who this dude is. I was just having a little fun with Tommy over his pointing out the second cut coke thing on the Melvin thread. Meant no harm and Tommy came back at me as usual. Who this guy I is, I have no idea.
No matter the amount of training these athletes must endure (which we all know is alot)and the up and comers, we still want the best for our buck and this card is not that.
It was all great to see UFC 70 free on Spike TV but if i was in Dana’s Position i would want people to pay to see the top fighters in UFC. That’s why you have UFC Fight Nights for, so you can give people a small taste of what the UFC has to offer. But if this fights not free it’s a bit of a let down from a fans perspective since it was earlier hinted it would be free. either way i’ll still be watching.
Hmmmm…I never ever, ever ever….but that was at least 3 or four steps…garbage. The same with peoples fighting skills, heart, money, and sickly wifes and maybe the 72 card…garbage. how funny is that?
So does anyone know what the ratings were on Spike UFC 70? I tried looking around but couldn’t find it.

I can watch up and comers elsewhere. Just cuz i don’t want to pay forty bucks on a lame card doesn’t mean i dont support MMA. Ufc isn’t the only place to watch mma ya know

MoreThanUFC!!!!! You go RoB.
They should try and get the ppv a litle bit cheaper 40 bucks is alot but i stay in Scotland but i’ll problaby be buying this one.
i will come up there if you are close to regina
I dont know if anyone posted this yet. The reason it isnt free is because Spike didnt wanna televise it. They have been losing money ( well, not exactly, but I wont get into how TV advertising works ) on some recent UFC events and they’re getting killed with the current TUF. I think this is a way for Spike to say, we love you but dont treat us like a b1tch. I’ll try to find the source for that.

thats surprising. they may have to charge a little less for advertising, it’s not like the payouts are killing them.

i just read the story on 5oz of pain. it sounds like the hbo deal is out also but espn is ready to take over in 08. so i think this will work out for the best for the ufc. it’s not like spike gets killer ratings on anything else they televise.
i will watch this at my buddies and put in 10bucks i guess!
The card is always up for debate but i still dont think they should have led on that it was gonna be free than nope its PPV. Cuz ya get all hyped up that ya can watch it for free so if it sucks your not losing any money on it. 40 bucks may not be alot of dough to some but its hard for me to part with on a questionable PPV event.

Hey Debbie, read these posts again. These people said, they are more than happy to pay $40 to watch a good card, just that they didn’t feel this card was werth it. No need to call them losers and lamebrains. Why are you so angry? You should go yell at Dana and Joe for making a lame card. In my post I was just trying to make a point at how stupid name calling is. I don’t think your a loser. Lastly what is with my name? (”when I saw your name” and “in honor of your name”) I don’t get it.
shittiest card ever dana go to hell is this the way to thank your fans for the best gate ever?fuck you asshole….the wec card is better get a life white you kill pride n now u gotta choke hold you can fuck everybody ufc 73 better be good or elite xc will get a good look next month
