Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

By Jesse Holland

Don’t call him big-time.

“I’m not big-time just yet,” according to an outgoing and jovial Sokoudjou. “Right now I’m just a noisemaker.”

And that’s some racket he’s making.

Earlier this year Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou made his PRIDE debut at Second Coming to little or no fanfare.

What a difference a few months makes.

Sokoudjou first shocked the world of mixed martial arts by doing what no other man had done before him: Knocking out Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

After the dust settled however, it was seen by many “experts” as just another upset that would be reduced to a footnote over the coming months.

Terms like “flash-in-the-pan” and “lucky punch” were showing up on MMA forums across the Net.

Then just over a month later, he knocked another Brazilian Top Team fighter in Ricardo Arona.

So much for the experts.

I caught up with “The African Assassin” over the weekend after several attempts (and much badgering). He spoke with flamboyancy and charisma, and I sensed this was a young fighter who was a little surprised by all the attention, but also enjoying every minute of it.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Rameau, first and foremost thank you for taking time out of your schedule to check in with UFCmania. Tell me, how are you handling your newfound stardom? You’ve gone from relative obscurity to overnight sensation. Has it been a challenge for you to adjust?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Shit, I’m the same guy I was, but now I have to always be serious. That sucks because that’s not me but I got to be on guard now ‘cause people are listening to my every word.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): You’re getting recognized everywhere now I’m sure. One of our readers recently posted a picture of you posing with him at Denny’s. I think that picture is getting more circulation than your last two PRIDE fights. Maybe we’ll have to change your nickname to The Denny’s Assassin.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) Man I had no idea that was going to blow up like it did. But that’s what I mean about being careful. I could have been acting crazy like a joke and who knows what people would say.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): They would probably say there’s a guy who really likes his Grand Slam breakfast.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) Yeah.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): I want to know how a fighter known for his Judo ends up knocking out two of Brazil’s top names (Nogueira & Arona). You’re supposed to be throwing them around like rag dolls not putting them to sleep.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: My hands have always been good. In the jungle you got to always be ready. The Judo is there but it hibernates until I need it.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Tell me more about the jungle.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Well I moved to California six years ago after growing up in West Africa. That was hard man, you got to walk miles just to get a pail of dirty water.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): At what point did you start your martial arts training?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: My parents started me in martial arts when I was five. I was a crazy boy always running around, they knew I needed something to direct all that energy.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Are they your biggest influence?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Yeah man, definitely. They kept me going in a positive direction.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Are you parents still in Africa? Have they seen you fight?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: They are still there. I would love to have them come and see me. I want them here very much but after 9/11 it is too difficult to get them Visas. Too much red tape.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Outside of your parents, who do you admire or look up to?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Dan Henderson. He’s got two belts and he’s on his way to a third!

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): He may very well be after the UFC buyout of PRIDE. What are your thoughts on having the two organizations under one roof?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: I think it’s good for the sport. Before you had to always guess who was the best fighter in the world. Now hopefully we can find out.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Speaking of the UFC, have you been in contact with Dana White? Does he have you on speed dial?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) No, I haven’t spoken to him.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): What is your contract status? Do you know who you’ll be fighting next?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: I’m not sure when or where I’m fighting next. I leave that stuff for my management to pick and choose. That stuff is too much for my jungle brain to handle.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): But I’m sure you must have someone in mind – and I think you know where I’m going with this!

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) I want Shogun. I’ll fight him in the cage, in the jungle, wherever he wants it.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): So who do I have to petition to make it happen?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou:That’s up to Dan Henderson and Ryan Parsons. They handle my contract.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Dan Henderson? How did you get involved with him?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: I was working for a guy Lou Demas who was a Greco Wrestler back in the day and he knew about my Judo background. He asked me to come out and help Dan Henderson train for his fight against another Judo guy Kazuhiro Nakamura. After that I continued training at Team Quest.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Dan Henderson is now fighting in your weight class and he could end up the champion before the year is through. What happens then? Do I hear Sokoudjou/Henderson at UFC 80?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) Oh no, I’ll wait until someone else has the belt. Dan would beat the crap out of me and I don’t need to be embarrassed on TV. Besides I don’t think it would make sense for me to fight a teammate. There are a lot of other people to fight first.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Like Shogun!

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Hopefully Shogun will be next.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Are you training differently with no fight in your immediate future?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: I’m training right now to improve technique. It’s a good opportunity for me to get better. When I find out who my next opponent is I will bring my training to a higher level.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): It must be difficult to train now that you’re easily recognizable.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Sometimes it’s cool to be noticed, but it can also be bothersome when I have to focus and train and all people want to do is talk. But I have to make time for them because that’s part of this too.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Would you consider training at a private gym?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: No, that’s no good for me. I will be doing everything except training. You have to have eyes on you all the time or you slack off.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Are you at a point where you make your living as a fighter or do you have to supplement fighting with another job?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: No I am a full-time fighter now. I do teach classes to keep busy. Idle time is not good for me. I like teaching.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): A video of you and Karo Parisyan competing at a Judo tournament is currently making the rounds on the Internet. Is there any friction between you and Karo?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Since that match I have not seen him until just now at UFC 71. At the time we competed, my English was very bad. I have no hard feelings or animosity towards him. I respect him as a fighter. But also I have no friendship with him.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): You’re still pretty young. How long do you see yourself competing?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: I will fight as long as I am healthy and can do it. My body will tell me when it’s time.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): What would you be doing if you weren’t a fighter?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Maybe a porn star? (Laughs) I don’t know man, I like computers. After I retire from fighting I would like to do something in computers.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Maybe you can do both. Internet porn is a billion dollar industry. Uh, not that I know, that’s just what I’ve heard. Really.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: (Laughs) Yeah I’ve heard that.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): Rameau, thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at UFCmania. Is there anything I can plug for you?

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou: Go to my Web site www.africanassassin.com and check me out. I want to give a shout to the fans. Peace.

Hard choice but agreed Shogun would be my choice.

I hope these guys get good exposure for this fight! Shogun is awsome, real good.
Where would these 2 guys fight? Pride? UFC? I think it would be awsome to see them fight in the UFC, but i would be content with the Pride event also.
Shogun is where my money would go too. Only cause he’s a great fighter, and i”ve seen Shogun lay a few mean ass kickin’s!…Werd*

I hope Soko comes to the UFC. Now that Dan is in the mix I could see thi happening soon enough. I Want Shogun….when everyone knows he’s on his way to UFC. I think we got a small hint. Personally I think he would beat Hendo. He’s being humble when he claims Hendo would kick his ass

I want to see this fight, with the winner next in line for the belt. That would be a clinch war for the ages … one of the best punchers in the clinch versus one of the best knee attacks in the clinch.

Soko versus Houston Alexander, another excellent puncher from inside the clinch, would be another sick fight I’d like to see.

soko dont want shogun …he beat 2 great fighters who dont knock that many people out with strikes …shogun is the most complete fighter in light heavyweight …shogun can strike and he has the ground game he doesnt have great punching power ..but his kicks and knees are the best at 205 (cro-cop has better kicks) just look at how he broke rampages ribs with his knees …if you watch the fight you dont even know what knee did it …soko beat 2 great fighters from top team …but so what shogun beat them too …can soko fight on the ground …?? dont get me wrong soko is great but shogun is head and shoulders above anyone else in 205 …rampage is a much better striker than soko …and you see what shogun did to him …

Soko would own Alexander right now with throws and punches, you forget that jardine knocked alexander down early in the fight, he just didnt finish it, give alexander a few fights before we through him in there with an elite judo guy, jardine was a good match up for alexander, and soko isnt

I don’t know how much credit I’d give Alexander for that fight. IMO, Jardine looked slow and out of shape. He didn’t appear to be in near the shape he was in when he fought Griffin.

Soko is a beast. He just needs experience. I don’t think he could hang with Shogun, at least not yet.

That was strictly a Judo match. and if you have seen him fight, he has great hands and good kicks. I think that he could is the Future of mma, and will soon be one of the best. I never usually tout a guy who is fairly new, but I like this guys skills, and he really seems like a good fighter. When you find someone that you like, and you feel like he has great talent, you back him all the way, and that is how I feel about Soko. Some feel that way about Chuck, or Cro Cop, and even Arlovski, I happen to like Soko.

FIRST–fedor is overrated… tons of his fights are wins against guys that were a lot smaller than him.
sure he has beaten cro cop, nogs, hunt, etc., but until he stops fighting the likes of matt lindland and grows some balls enough to come fight arlovski, slivia, gonzaga… im still unimpressed. didnt even fight werdun or barnett while he was in pride.

SECOND–no clue why you say this dude is one dimensional. he already has A level strikes with hands and feet, and his olympic level judo will make him very difficult to take down. he is fighting with quest so i assume he is just plain tough.

while im not gonna ride his nutz just yet, he has a bright bright bright future

No Bandwagon. I have do not know anyone who really thinks that he amazing, including myself. I just feel that he has talent and that I am behind his skills. As for Bisping, I think he is being spoon fed victories, and using him as a comparison is way out there, and why you ask? Because Soko has not been spoon fed, he knocked out Nog, and Arona. I think the bandwagon statement should be saved for people who think Serra is the Future!!!

As for if he loses, well like I said when Frank Mir Lost, I hope he turns around because he has the talents to be the future of the sport.

Also you mention that he was knocked out by Glover, and wonder if I seen that fight, and the answer is yes. I think he did well against him, and that he absorbed quite a bit of damage before he was caught. I think that now that he is training full time, and with a camp that he will only get better.

As for his use of the Judo, the two guys that he would have had to use it on he knocked out!! I think sooner then later we will get a chance to see his Judo throws.
Fedor is overrated……at that point you lose all credibiliity. And most of his fights aren’t against small fighters. He fought Lindland because Bodog wanted a big name to go up against Fedor, and Lindland was the best they could do. To have gone through the guys he has over 7 years and to have never really lost is remarkable. And something no other big-time MMArtist can say.

You say he’s got to fight someone, but then mention he’s fought Crocop and Nog. He’s beaten Big Nog, twice. That alone makes whatever point you’re trying to make invalid.

I don’t think Fedor would need grow balls to fight Sylvia or Arlovski. He beat them both in the same evening. Put either of these two in the ring with Mark Hunt and they wouldn’t get past the first round. And I think some people have short memories, Arlovski lost to Sylvia twice. It might hurt to remember that, but that’s a fact.

Later,
Chris Valentine
way to jump on the bandwagon valentine what are you gonna say when he gets beat…?? ohh maybe i like bisping instead ….hes the future …

I think sooner then later we will get a chance to see his Judo throws.

have you ever seen soko use a ground game ..??? neither have i …he is one dimensional …hes like chuck he likes to strike guys who dont skrike back ….shogun does strike back and can take a punch …can soko take a punch …??? obviously not if hes getting knocked out by tex …and if being on team quest automatically makes you tough why is it that before soko the only other guy you hear about team quest is dan hendo …??? why doesnt soko call out rampage…?? cause he seen what rampage did to a fighter with his similar style …likes to strike and hard to take down ….cause hes scared of strikers with knockout power ….he underestimates shoguns strikes ….there is a reason why on every mma top 10 shogun is #1 in the light heavyweight division ….

This guy is crazy to think Matt Lindland who got knocked out in like 10 seconds by Dave Terrell, could even come close to matching up with Arlovski or Sylvia. AA would knock the stink off that bald bastard! and Sylvia would destroy him as well. IMO fedor Thrives off past glory and if he dosn’t fight big names then he should be known as the Former #1 heavyweight in the world. And by the way if you think Gonzaga’s win over CC was a fluke than you are delusional, he didn’t get one lucky punch like Randleman, he punked his ass through the whole match and finished it off just how he chose to. Cro cop would never fight GG again. He would be fedors toughest fight in years.

GG is like 4-0 in the octagon by the way. And i’m defensive? what about you and Cro cop, i’m stating the facts the Gonzaga dominated him and your stating you opinion that you think it was a fluke or whatever. What did you see in that fight, not previous fights mind you, that made you think Cro cop had any advantage? I think you have a man crush on CC and your butt hurt that he got embarrassed. get over it. And yeah by the way Fedor should keep giving guy’s shots, thats the way the buisness works. Or he can consider himself the best heavyweight ever and start fight welterweights just to not risk losing? sounds like a punk move

I am not sure how this went from an interview with Soko to a discussion on the best heavy weight in the world… but anyways I just thought I would mention and post a little intresting tid bit of info in regards to that heavy weight divison.

Brock Lesnar had his first fight in K-1 last night and won, in one minute! Convincingly too. He past the guys guard with no effort what so ever but when you are that big (he looked just as big as he did in his WWE days) and are a former NCAA Champ, you are probably going to have some damn good wrestling skills. If anyone would like to watch the fight here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaVzwK6GROA

Now by that I am not saying that he would school the entire UFC heavy weight division but he has trained with Renzo Gracie and is training at MFS, so that could make for a damn good fighter. Especially concidering he is only 25. I hope to one day see him in the UFC just to see how good he really is.

Man I am not going to continue to argue with you about something I “Just have a Feeling about.” As for the Team Quest comment, Randy Cotour came out of Team Quest, Also Evan Tanner Came out of Team Quest. I like soko’s Talent and although you have not seen his ground game, “I have a damn feeling” that has one, and that if he stays at team quest it will not be long and he will have a great GnP game.

This wins for most rediculous post on this forum. Is it his fault no one has forced him to use his ground game. I could just picture Soko
“Shoot, im dominating this guy with my standup, but, I dont wanna be one dimensional, lets go for a takedown”….

C’mon dude. He knocked out both those guys in like 2 minutes. Can’t say he is one dimenisonal. How in the hell is he gonna underestimate Shogun’s strikes? You think you konw more about Shogun’s strikes than his potential competitors? ANyboyd that calls out Shogun is not deserved to be put in the same sentence as “scared”. Bottom line.
His lost to tex was before he really was legit into the standup game, and he took multiple bombs before going down.

Soko would own Alexander right now with throws and punches, you forget that jardine knocked alexander down early in the fight, he just didnt finish it, give alexander a few fights before we through him in there with an elite judo guy, jardine was a good match up for alexander, and soko isnt
Whatever the speculation, think about it, he is freakin 23. That is soooo young to do what he has done already, to beat the quality of the two opponents he has already beat. Win or loose his next, or whatever, can’t think of another name, I mean ANYBODY, that was at this stage, at this early in there career.
