shogun ufc debutMauricio “Shogun” Rua will make his long-awaited Octagon debut at UFC 76 in Anaheim, Calif., according to quotes attributed to UFC President Dana White in The Oregonian.

No opponent has been named at this point.

Here’s a snip from White:

“He’s signed and ready to roll. You couldn’t meet a classier guy in your whole life. He will be so marketable.”

The Brazilian light heavyweight — who is considered the top 205-pound fighter in the world — is the 2005 PRIDE FC Middleweight Grand Prix Champion. He destroyed Alistair Overeem and highly touted Ricardo Arona in the same night — both in the first round — to capture the coveted title.

Shogun also dismantled current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson with a first round knockout at PRIDE: “Total Elimination” in 2005.

His only “real” loss was to Renato “Babalu” Sobral early in his career. Shogun also has dropped a fight with Mark Coleman, but that was because Rua fell at an awkward angle and broke his arm during the fight.

There’s no telling who UFC matchmaker Joe Silva will put in the cage with him at the Honda Center during UFC 76. But Shogun has made short work of some of the very best fighters in the sport throughout his career.

Look for that trend to continue in the UFC.

***

In other news, White mentions in the article that he is, “moving close to signing a contract that would bring PRIDE FC heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the best fighter in the world, to the UFC.”

Take it for what it’s worth because this had been speculated since the beginning of 2007. However, there is some unsubstantiated news coming out of some reliable Russian message boards that corroborates White’s latest claim.

Let’s hope this time the news is closer to fact than it is rumor.

If Dana White plans on making Shogun marketable, then he won’t fight a top ten Light Heavyweight in his debut match int he UFC. I would think he would still get to fight someone someone tough in his debut match. Maybe he fights a guy like Jardine or Machida or maybe he fights David Terrell.

Red, yer right… Its gonna be a stepping stone for Shogun (or maybe two) before he fights anyone worth a salt.
As far as Fedor - Good luck. Id really like to sit here and say that Fedor would see competition in the UFC.. but outside of the architect (randy), Gonzaga, Mirko, Arlovski, Sylvia… I dont want to see him drop trough and shit on all the fighters. UFC HW division is piss poor outside of those names.

Take this for what its worth(I live in Vegas and workout at Extreme Couture) but I heard that Shogun is getting the loser of the Tito/Evans fight. They will give the winner of that fight another match in Oct/Nov. and it will set up the Ortiz/Rua fight that everyone is waiting for if Tito wins and if Tito loses you’ll see that fight in Oct!

The Brandon Vera who’s moving to lightweight? Yea, definetly…

As for the Shogun-Alexander bout: that would be by far the most stupid match-up the UFC could produce. At this time the UFC does not know if his KO victory over Jardine was a fluke or Jardine’s fault, he said maybe one time too often how he’s already looking past his fight with Alexander and didn’t seemed that focused.

If Alexander turns out to be a knockout artist and he has been promoted well enough, then it would make sense. But imagine Dana brings in Shogun and he gets knocked out by Alexander, who is still a nobody. That would be CroCop all over again, except it would be even in his very first fight.

What Shogun should get is someone with a name who poses a certain level of risk, but is not entirely unpredictable. Someone like Tito Ortiz, who desperately tries to redeem himself or Forrest Griffin, thou I’d feel sorry for Griffin being on the recieving end of Shoguns Chute Boxe Muay Thai. A Shogun-Sobral rematch would certainly be a good idea, but rematches are usually 2nd or 3rd fights.

I would love to see a remacth of Sobral Sho Gun in his 2nd fight in, It was a classic the first time in.If you haven’t seen it check it out on you tube. I’d like to see Sobral fight Wilson Gouviea (3 straight UFC wins) and I’d like to see Sho Gun fight Machida (beaten B.J. Yeah, I dont see anyone flat out beating Fedor in the UFC… upsets are possible. But if I had to pick… Couture might have the ground skills to hold him, if he can stay away from the Fedor’s Jujitsu he might edge out a decision.

And yeah… Alexander needs a few more fights before fighting someone like Shogun. I think Alexander is going to be ‘protected’ by Dana for a bit…

the david terrel fight wont happen for sure, i doubt Dana would risk Terrell pulling out days before the fight, and then trying to find someone to fight SHOGUN on days notice…it wont be a nobody ala Eddie Snachez, because look at what that did for CC…I think Tito and Rashad are bad matchups for Shogun, not to mention his first fight should showcase his Standup, not his jits…Doubtfull Machida, will slow Shogun down too much, Babalu needs a win first i think, Alexander no, for reasons Youtapped mentioned, Ufc wont risk forrest or Bisping just yet…I would say Bonnar (name, hungry coming off of suspension), Jardine (name, hungry coming off of bad loss),Wilson Gouvie would be fun to watch but hasnt really made a name so it would be risky like Houston..Hector Ramirez, i wouldnt really want to see it, but i can see them doing that…if James Irvin recovered by then i can see that..i bet they will give him someone who likes to bang, but also has a punchers chance and maybe a little ground game

I doubt Shoguns gonna have a real tough test on his first fight coz he has to adapt to the cage the rules the Americans and the rest of it so it would realy be unfair to expect him to fight Chuck on his debut.
I think he might struggle not being able to use those stomps.
Lets hope he dosent get caught up in the moment in his first fight and head stomp someone and get DQed.
I cant wait to see Fedor in the UFC its pretty much inevetable now isnt it.Imagine Fedor having someone against the cage and raining elbows down on them, thats a fighter who the UFC makes sense to.

I would hope that Dana would feed Bonner. He’s done virtually nothing since losing to Forest in the Ultimate Fighter finale. He won two conterversial desisions over Hoger and Jardine. He’s lost two lucklaster fighters to Evans and Forrest again. He got suspended for taking steroids. There only thing he’s done sinc ethe T.V.show is submit James Irvin. Where I come from anyways everyone thinks he’s a overrated fighter and washed up. Why not give Sho Gun some respectability by killing a NAME (thats all he is) and getting rid of Bonner at the same time? That might be a really good idea. The UFC is big on rematches. Rampage’s first fight against Marvin the martian setup that way. Liddell-Horn II, Hughes-Penn II, list goes on.

Just like the Houston Alexander situation though- do they want to protect Sobral? If he loses another one he might be finished. And what if it turns out he has Shogun’s number and submits him? For the money they are putting out on Shogun they want to give him an easier starter fight.

Firstly, I agree with you… 100%. Should Bonnar be ass raped? ABSOLUTELY. But, Dana looks at Griffin and Bonnar as the saviors of the UFC… because in all honesty they are. Without that fight, would the UFC be buying Pride, selling out internationally, running their fifth TUF? I doubt it… but where they could of went, who bloody well knows.

As for Boner saving the UFC- Dana White is a “what have you done for me lately” guy. He went from Liddell nut hugger to “Chuck has a lot to prove” in less than 24 hours. Had Boner beaten Rashad Evans as he was supposed to or pulled off the comeback victory and beat Forrest (setting up Boner-Griffin III cha-ching!), then “ah steroids, schmeroids”.

A Shogun-Sobral rematch would certainly be a good idea, but rematches are usually 2nd or 3rd fights.[/quote]

I smoke blunts with Houston Alexander here in Omaha, NE. Last year this skinny white dude submitted him at South Sokol Hall, before that KO over The Dean of Mean.
So there is NO WAY he will ever become near title contention in the UFC. Maybe Strikeforce or the WEC…if he steps it up.~

The fight I’d give anything to see is Couture VsFedor. If Dana could arrange that it would be a perfect match for either legend to retire from. What do y’all think?

Fedor is the man, he can be beat, but not by anyone in the UFC anytime soon. The guys a beast, I beleive he can beat Coture, Sylvia, Arlovski and Kongo everyone has a lucky punch but to beat him you need more than a couple of those, hes been rocked by big ass dudes got a little fuzzy legged only to punch dude in the face drop him and rear naked choke him instantly, Someone was saying Bonnar is big name in the UFC that guys career is done hes been beat by some sorry ass dudes like Rashad, fedor would humilate hime. Also people were saying Sobral should make a come back and he almost beat Shogun. Almost doesnt count, Shogun is on another level and I think he will knock out Forrest, but like I always say we have to wait and see.

Hes not gonna fight Alexander he fighting Forrest even then, Shogun wouldnt let Alexander clown like that ill put my house onit and maybe Brandon Vera could beat Fedor after he defeats better competion like Sylvia then we will know for sure if he could hang with Fedor.

wise and clever warrior couture has a chance against fedor
greco roman dirty boxing clinch… and if he can get top position maybe push him to the cage for GnP. lindland did great with greco roman underhooks - but then he never really had any momenso f domination - even without the rope grab it seems he never really had a chance other than the cut. but couture with nderhooks would be more trouble for fedor.

It’s hard to imagine fedor not having a better answer than gonzaga did though…

i think gonzaga could have a chance.
barnett

plus there’s fedor’s

striking, TD defense, submissions, cardio, footwork knees ….
yikes.
